This Holy Protection icon depicts the Theotokos holding her veil over the people, symbolizing her protection and intercession. It commemorates a miracle which took place in 910 in Constantinople. During a barbarian attack, people prayed for her protection in the Blachernae Church, where her robe and belt were kept. She appeared and spread her veil over the church. A storm then arose, destroying the barbarian’s ships and saving the city from invasion.
